Three children were crushed to death while five others injured when a truck rammed into the premises of a government-run school in Barachatti area of Gaya district on Tuesday.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Saurabh Kumar said the truck ran into the school premises, situated near NH-2, in Pareya village after its driver lost control over the vehicle.
The incident occurred when the children were playing in the field adjacent to school which does not have the boundary wall.
The deceased were identified as Amit Kumar (8), Abhishek Kumar (8) and Durgawati Kumari (10), the DIG said, adding the five injured students were hospitalised.
Angry local people assaulted the truck driver and set fire to some furniture of the school.
The injured driver was also admitted to hospital. District Magistrate Kumar Ravi and Senior Superintendent of Police Garima Mallik have reached the spot and announced for payment of ex-gratia and compensation to the family of the deceased.
A large police contingent has been sent to the spot to control the agitated mob.
