Three arms smugglers held, weapons seized in Bengal

Kolkata, March 12: Three members of an arms smuggling gang racket were arrested Saturday from West Bengal’s Howrah railway station, police said.

“Acting on a tip-off, we arrested three persons from Down Jamalpur Express at Howrah railway station. Five firearms, ammunition and explosive were recovered,” Superintendent of Government Railway Police (GRP) Rabindranath Mukherjee said at Howrah.

Gun runners are using the railways to smuggle firearms from Munger in Bihar to West Bengal. Recently, six people were arrested and a huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered again from Down Jamalpur Express, he said.

The arrest came during a special drive carried out by the GRP personnel following the directives of the Central Election Commission to seize firearms and ammunition ahead of the assembly polls in the state, Mukherjee told IANS by phone.

“We have recovered five firearms, all made in Munger, and 10 detonators, 50 gelatin sticks and 15 kg of ammonium nitrate, which is used for making high intensity explosives,” he said.

All the three smugglers were presented before a Howrah district court, he added.
