Child rights activist and Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi on Friday demanded the government to ensure complete ban on child labour.
“Immediate and safe passage of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill in both the Houses should be the moral responsibility of every parliamentarian,” said Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi at a conference recently.
Thousands of children are sent from Maharashtra, Bihar and Jharkhand and made to work as domestic helpers or in factories in AP and Telangana. Unfortunately the police, are not doing enough to stop this,” lamented Satyarthi in an interaction with mediamen at Press Club here on Friday.
Sathyarthi, who is a role model for children’s rights across the world, also revealed some of his global concerns for children. “There are 180 million children currently working as child labourers and at the same time, there are 200 million unemployed adults. We are making children work, while adults remain unemployed,” he rued.
Mr. Satyarthi said, “A child needs care and protection, but trapped in labour, cannot afford to wait for a single day.” “I urge Parliament to pass the child labour Bill. I demand a complete ban on all forms of child labour bringing the law in sync with the Right to Education Act,” he said.
