Those green tea supplements could damage your liver, warn researchers

NEW DELHI: Consuming high doses of supplements containing green tea extracts can have a harmful effect on your liver, according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

According to DailyMail Online, most supplements contain up to 5-1000 mg, while tea infusions typically only contain 90 to 300 mg of antioxidants, said EFSA.

Consuming more than 800mg of green tea catechins each day can have a harmful effect on the liver, according to the body’s review.

Catechins are substances naturally found in green tea, the most potent of which is epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG.

Consuming green tea on a daily basis is thought to have a number of health benefits, including improving your brain function, building immunity, curb cholesterol and lowers the risk of developing cancer.
