Third accused held for murder of five-year-old

Chandigarh, May 02: A third person has been arrested for the kidnapping and murder here of a five-year-old boy in December last year, police said Sunday.

Nand Kishore, 26, was arrested by Chandigarh Police in Launor village in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh.

Khushpreet Singh, son of a dairy owner, was kidnapped Dec 21 from near his house. The body was recovered Jan 5. The boy was strangulated to death and had his face smashed to prevent identification.

The family had paid a ransom of Rs.400,000 to the kidnappers, but the child was not released.

On March 22, two brothers Sukhdev Singh, 36, and Gurvinder Singhm, 32, were arrested for the crime.

“During the interrogation, Sukhdev disclosed the name of Kishore, who was working as a labourer. Kishore had gone on a motorcycle with Sukhdev to pick the ransom amount and kept the money at his house,” said a police official.

“Kishore left Chandigarh after we arrested Sukhdev and Gurvinder. It took four days of continuous raids to nab Kishore. He was hiding in an area on the banks of river Ganga in Unnao district,” he added.

The kidnapping, alleged police inaction and the subsequent recovery of the body led to violence in and around Burail village in Sector 45 here. The area witnessed violence for over two days.
