Thieves break into police quarters

Hyderabad, April 07: Property offenders on Tuesday stole cash and valuables from the house of a sub-inspector in the police quarters right behind the Director-General of Police’s (DGP) office and a stone’s throw away from the Saifabad police station.

Police, who prescribe do’s and don’ts to citizens, were caught on the wrong foot as the SI’s family took no precautions to secure their own house properly.

The thieves entered the house easily and opened the almirah as the keys of the latter were kept hanging to it. The theft took place in Quarter no 23 of the police quarters at Lakdikapul. Revathi Devi, the SI working in the communications department of the City Police at the Commissioner’s office, Basheerbagh, stays in the quarter along with her husband, Sri Gopal, who works as an engineer in CMS Infosys Systems Private Limited.

Saifabad detective police inspector K Shankar said Revathi and her husband had gone to Warangal on Sunday. Sri Gopal returned home on Tuesday and attended his office.

He returned from office and later went to his friend’s house where he stayed back for the night. He returned home this morning only to find his house burgled.

“The offenders did not break open the lock. They opened the main door by reaching up to the bolt through an opened window,’’ the DI said.

The keys of the almirah were left hanging and the burglars did not have to sweat hard to open it. A laptop, five grams of gold and Rs 8,000 was stolen from the house, police said. “We suspect some known persons might be involved in this,’’ the inspector said.

Asked about the security provided to the quarters, officials did not elaborate much but said that “no one dares enter the quarters.” Ironically, this is not the first time that a theft took place in the quarters. A few years back, a similar incident occurred in the same fashion.

“Even basic precautions were not taken by the inmates and the offenders found it easy and coolly completed the job,’’ an official pointed out.

Saifabad police registered a case and are investigating.
