London: Theresa May was questioned over her decision to wear a £995 pair of leather trousers for a newspaper photoshoot by a reporter on a flight to Bahrain.
The Prime Minister was reportedly interrogated after it emerged she wore the trousers and a pair of £295 Burberry trainers when photographed by the Sunday Times last month, the Guardian reported.
The photo, published about two weeks ago, shows Mrs May, smiling and sitting casually on a sofa in her home, wearing chic leather trousers by designer Amanda Wakeley.
The uproar, referred to as “Trousergate” by tabloid newspapers in Britain, has raised cries of sexism and ageism.
“I don’t have leather trousers. I don’t think I’ve ever spent that much on anything, apart from my wedding dress,” Nicky Morgan, a former education secretary, told The Times of London, adding that Mrs. May’s sartorial choice had been “noticed and discussed” in the Conservative Party she leads.”
Ms Morgan on Wednesday pulled out of a planned appearance on a TV show after the row over her criticism of the Prime Minister’s designer leather trousers.
The British media reported that Ms Morgan pulled out of Friday’s episode of BBC One’s hit satirical show Have I Got News for You due to “unforeseen circumstances”.
Foreign secretary Boris Johnson on Tuesday made light of the situation. He joked, who went on a walking holiday in the Swiss Alps this summer: “Our wonderful Prime Minister actually wears lederhosen.” Lederhosen are actually leather shorts, rather than long trousers, connected to the chest and shoulders via straps.
