Theft accused hangs self in police custody

Jodhpur:A 28-year-old man, accused of theft, allegedly committed suicide by hanging in custody of Ratanada police station here, police said today.

Sirajuddin committed suicide last night by hanging from the bar of the gate of the cell, police official said.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered in the matter considering the death in police custody.

Jodhpur Police Commissioner Ashok Rathore has suspended a head constable and sent the entire staff of the Ratanada police station to the line.

“It is a serious matter and we have assured the relatives of the victim a fair investigation into the matter and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered,” said Rathore, adding that no FIR has been registered so far.

According to the police, Sirajuddin was arrested from Sardarpura police station area on Sunday afternoon on the charges of a theft, from where he was brought to the Ratanada police station in the evening and lodged in the cell.

“In the night, when his family members came inquiring about him, they saw him hanging from the bar of the gate of the cell. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” said a police official.

On the other hand, the relatives of the victim have demanded suspension of the entire staff of the police station and a judicial inquiry into the matter.

They alleged that he committed suicide in the presence of the staff and officials.

“Had it been spotted by the policemen in time, my brother could have been saved”, Zakir, brother of the victim said.

This is a second such incident of suicide in a police station in Jodhpur.

About two months ago, an accused of burglary, Nemaram, had hanged himself in Bilara police station’s bathroom.
