Tharoor terms Pakistan bomb blast at UN office as ‘tragic’

New Delhi, October 07: India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor Tuesday described the suicide bomb attack on the office of the World Food Programme in Islamabad as “tragic”.

The minister, who is visiting the United Arab Emirates, posted on Twitter: “Tragic, all the more so since those killed were working to help people in need.”

“My heart goes out to my ex-colleagues of UN WFP,” said Tharoor, who left the UN as an under secretary general for communications and public information in 2007. He was India’s candidate for the post of UN secretary general, coming a close second after Ban Ki-moon.

The bomb attack on the heavily fortified UN WFP office left five people dead Monday.

The Pakistani Taliban Tuesday claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing, which prompted immediate closure of all UN offices across Pakistan “until further notice”.
