Thai protesters say conditions not met for ending rally

Bangkok, May 11: A leader of Thai anti-government protesters said on Tuesday conditions for ending their five-week occupation of Bangkok’s main shopping district have not been met, casting into doubt chances for a swift end to the protests.

The protesters said they were not satisfied by Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban’s visit to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) on Tuesday morning to hear complaints filed against him by families of Thais killed in an April 10 clash between protesters and soldiers.

The red-shirted protesters say Suthep must be formally charged by police, not the DSI, in connection to an April 10 clash between troops and protesters in Bangkok’s old quarter that killed 25 people and wounded more than 800.

“We cannot just end the protest without true reconciliation which means they have to take responsibility for their action,” Weng Tojirakarn, a protest leader, told.
