Thai general apologizes for ‘bikini comments’

Thailand’s military ruler has apologized for his recent comments which suggested that attractive bikini clad foreign tourists might be unsafe on the country’s world-famous beaches.

General Prayuth Chan-ocha had said that tourists perceive the Southeast Asian country as “beautiful and safe” and wear bikinis “wherever they like”, which is a problem, and added that they are safe “only if they are not beautiful”, News.com.au reported.

He had made the insensitive comments after bodies of two British tourists were found bludgeoned to death on the resort island of Koh Tao recently, and has received severe backlash on social media sites for insinuating that unattractive women were safe to wear bikinis while pretty women were in danger of attack

Prayuth has now backtracked on his “chauvinistic” comments and apologized for his “harsh” words and added that he didn’t mean to criticise or look down on anyone.

He has also guaranteed that “Thailand is still safe” and added that he just wanted to warn tourists to be careful.

Thailand tourism industry is still recuperating since the army seized power in May. (ANI)
