Tenth std. student killed in school roof collapse

Kancheepuram, February 06: A tenth standard student was crushed to death on the spot and five others injured when the roof of a school building, where they were sleeping after a special class, collapsed in the wee hours of today at Cheyyur near Madurantakam in this district of Tamil Nadu. Police said about 22 students were sleeping in the premises of St.Marys Higher Secondary School after finishing the special class for the ensuing tenth standard board exams when the mishap occurred at around 0330 hrs.

One of the students, Thyagarajan (15), hailing from Chinnakuppam near Panayur, was crushed to death on the spot after a huge slab and asbestos sheets fell on him. Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and removed his body from the debris. It was later sent to Madurantakam Government Hospital for post mortem. Five students, Madan (15), Ajithkumar (15), Prasad (15), Haridas (15) and Thirunavukkarasu (15), were rescued from the rubble and admitted to Cheyyur and Chengalpattu Government hospitals. Kancheepuram District Superintendent of Police Prem and other officials rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue operations.

Cheyyur police have registered a case and were investigating the cause of the mishap.
