Tension in some pockets of Ramanathapuram dist

Tension prevailed in some pockets of Ramanathapuram district which witnessed sporadic violence by Thevar and SC community people yesterday but the situation was fully under control, police said today. Police said two groups clashed at Valandharavai village around mid-night last night hurling stones and petrol bombs. Three houses were damaged in the violence. A 16 year-old boy lost his hand in the clash. Police registered cases against 75 persons in connection with the violence at Kannan koil street when a textile shop was burnt,and a petrol bunk ransacked.Shops in Ramanathapuram and Paramakudi remained closed today. Violence erupted after three persons belonging to the Thevar community were killed in Ramanathapuram on October 30 during freedom fighter Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar’s birth anniversary celebrations. Though bus services were resumed,it did not cover sensitive areas including Paramakudi and Manamadurai,police said. Meanwhile,police arrested some persons and registered cases against 77 persons for allegedly entering a village at Anaikulam colony near Tiruchuli in Virudhunagar district and attacking dalits.Two persons were injured in the attack.Police reinforcements had been sent to Anaikulam and Kuzhavikulam villages. In Madurai, two crew members of a town bus were injured when unidentified men pelted stones at a bus bound from Kariapatti to Madurai at villapuram in this city late last night. Officials said five buses were damaged in the stone pelting. Road blockades were held at Pudur and near city court demanding arrest of those responsible for the three murders, police added. PTI
