Tension gripped Baramulla town

Baramulla, February 28: Sectarian tension on Sunday gripped Kunzar area of Baramulla district following desecration of a religious book for which one person has been arrested.

Two youths allegedly desecrated a holy book in Kunzar town on Srinagar-Gulmarg road, 35 kms from Srinagar on Sunday evening, official sources said.

The rival group torched a residential house but timely action by police and fire brigade department prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, the sources said.

They said police have arrested one Farooq Ahmed Wani and started searches to nab the other accused Tariq Ahmed Shiekh, a resident of Handwara in Kupwara district.

Senior officials of the district are monitoring the situation, the sources added.

In another incident, separatist guerrillas gunned down a truck driver in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday evening, police said.

A senior police officer said pistol shots were at Muhammad Ayub Wani, a truck driver by profession as he was returning home after offering prayers in the local mosque in Kakpora town, 28 km from Srinagar.

“Ayub succumbed to the critical bullet injuries before he could be shifted to hospital,” the officer said.

Two brothers of the slain driver are working in the state police, according to sources.

No guerrilla group has yet claimed responsibility for the killing.
