New Delhi, February 19:An east Delhi locality today witnessed tension between people of two communities over an argument, but police intervention prevented the situation from escalating further.
Twelve people were detained in connection with the incident that took place at around 3.30 PM in Pandav Nagar when Riasat Ali along with his relatives came to a graveyard in the area to bury his father Sheir Ali.
“The graveyard is adjacent to a house where a Hindu family was residing. Both the sides picked up an argument after which police was informed,” a senior police official said.
When police arrived and tried to cool down tempers, people who had come with Ali allegedly turned violent and burnt two motorcycles belonging to police and a private one, the official said.
He said investigations were on in this incident.
Another official said the clash was prevented due to timely intervention of police. “There was no clash between two communities. The intention was to create a clash, but it was prevented.”
He said police also exercised much restraint.
