Tens injured in Mubarak birthday event

Cairo, May 05: Violent clashes between anti and pro-Mubarak protesters have left dozens wounded in Egypt as supporters of the country’s former ruler gathered to mark his 83rd birthday.

The clashes took place on Wednesday outside the state TV building in the capital Cairo, AFP reported.

A security official says supporters of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who came together to mark his birthday, condemned calls for his prosecution over his alleged role in the killing of anti-regime protesters.

The protesters pelted each other with stones and traffic was blocked during the bloody clashes before the army stepped in to break up the crowd and restore calm, the official said.

Demonstrators have been demanding the ex-president’s prosecution for months now.

Mubarak is facing charges of corruption and the use of violence against anti-regime protesters.

Egyptian activists say Mubarak must be tried for killing hundreds of protesters during the country’s popular uprising that led to his ouster on February 11.

A report by an Egyptian government’s fact-finding commission states that 846 people were killed and more than 6,400 others injured during the country’s historic revolution.
