Ten killed in fresh Afghan violence

Kabul, August 05: An air strike and a roadside bomb attack have killed at least 10 people in eastern and southern Afghanistan, local officials and villagers say.

At least four members of a family were killed on Tuesday in an air strike by foreign troops in southern Kandahar province in Afghanistan, villagers said after bringing the bodies to the provincial capital.

In Kabul, a spokesman for the NATO-led forces, which command most of the foreign troops in Kandahar, said he would check the report.

The strike happened late on Tuesday, killing three boys and a man, all members of one family, in Arghandab, a lush valley to the western outskirts of Kandahar city, residents said.

“They were civilians killed by the air strike while fast asleep,” said Jan Mohammad, a village elder.

Mohammad was among scores of residents from Arghandab who brought the bodies to show to provincial authorities in the city.

In another incident, at least six men were killed after a roadside bomb ripped through a civilian vehicle in eastern Afghanistan, the provincial government said.

Afghanistan has suffered a surge in violence ahead of landmark presidential and provincial council elections on August 20.

The bomb hit the group in Nangarhar province on Wednesday as they were traveling to meet district government officials, said a government spokesman.

“Two of those killed are tribal elders and four of them are employees of a private Afghan construction company,” Ahmad Zia Abdulzai told AFP.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
