A tempo driver, Ashwin Nayak, involved in killing of two Jain monks, Hastagiri Maharaj and Gyanshekharji Maharaj, in a road mishap at Asuriya village near Nabipur about 50 kms from the city on National Highway Number 8 on January 1 last year, has been arrested. Bharuch District Supritendent of Police(DSP) Gautam Parmar said. Talking to PTI today, Parmar said that CCTV footage collected from the toll naka at Karjan on National Highway Number 8 helped identify the vehicle involved in the mishap which led to arrest of the tempo driver Nayak and seizure of his vehicle. “Police had identified about 400 vehicles passing through this toll naka at Karjan after the mishap on January 1 and shortlisted 12 vehicles. After this, the CID started investigations into the case,” Parmar said. The clothes collected from the deceased Jain monks had several tyre marks on them which matched the tyres of the tempo. Police collected details the tempo owner from the RTO office and went to Pardi in Kamrej taluka in South to arrest the driver, who confessed about the mishap, Parmar said. This tempo driver had used the wrong side to overtake two other vehicles on the road and ended up ramming into the Jain monks walking on the road, Parmar said. After killing the Jain monks, the driver absconded from the scene and there was a state wide protest by the members of Jain community demanding a probe. PTI
