A protest meeting was organized in Sayeedabad under the Chairmanship of Mr. Mohammed Qamaruddin, retired Engineering-in-Chief. It was organized by Aiwan-e-Fankaar, Bazm-e-Farogh-e-Urdu and Radio and TV Artistes’ Guild.
Addressing the meeting, Dr. Javeed Kamal said that on the representation and continious struggles made by the lovers of Urdu, Maulana Azad National Urdu University was established by Govt. of India. Unfortunately, right from its inception, it fell prey to various controversies. Recently, at the instance of honourable Minister for Human Resource Development, Dr. M. M. Pallam Raju, Vice Chancellor of Urdu University Prof. Mohammed Miyan made announcement that a department of Urdu would also be established in Urdu University.
The objective of the establishment of this university was to offer higher education through medium.
It seems that it is a policy of pleasing the Central and State Governments. There is an apprehension that in the future, Urdu University would lose its identity as an institution of imparting higher education through Urdu medium. It would be transformed into a university of various language.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. M.Q. Saleem, President of Bazm-e-Farogh-e-Urdu said that University was entangled in some problems right from its inception in 1999. Hostile attitude was adopted in the recruitments of Urdu knowing teachers because of which its image was tarnished. Establishment of a department of Telugu in Urdu University is ridiculous.
Dr. Moin Amar Bambod, Secretary of Radio and T.V. Artistes’ Guild strongly opposed the decision of the Vice Chancellor of Urdu University, Prof. Mohammed Miyan. He told that we expect from him that he would promote Urdu and not that he would take any step against Urdu.
The protest meeting was attended by Mr. Mohammed Nayyar-e-Azam, columnist Mr. Sultan Subhani, writer, Mr. Mahboob Khan Asghar. They also condemned this proposal in their speeches. Mr. Yousufuddin Yousuf recited poem on Urdu and conducted the meeting. Mr. Mohammed Fazal proposed vote of thank.
