Telangana suicides force TRS to rework strategy

Hyderabad, August 02: Even while celebrating the resounding victory in the recent bypolls, the TRS seems to be nagged by one worry the continuing suicides of students and youths for the cause of Telangana.

After the December 9 developments, several heartbroken students and youths ended their lives in the region. Since then, whenever the issue flared up it led to suicides somewhere in the region.

Fearing a threat to the TRS’ leadership of the movement from continuing suicides, the party has decided to change its strategy. Instead of intensifying the movement, the party now wants to concentrate on strengthening it by taking up mass enrolments in its student wing, the RTSV and also by taking up local problems of the people in various areas of Telangana.

The TRS believes that the Congress led UPA government will take a decision on Telangana only after receiving the report of the Justice BN Srikrishna Committee and hence there is no use of intensifying the movement before that. “Concentrating on the movement will only flare up emotions that will not help the movement in any way. The TRS leadership wants to slow down the movement and concentrate on strengthening the organisational network,” a senior TRS leader told Express.

The party plans to enrol 15 lakh students from across the region in the TRSV. By accomplishing this, party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao wants to send the right message to the youth and students and prevent them from taking extreme steps. Constituency level teams with 1015 active TRSV activists have already completed first round of membership drive in all the districts of the region.
