Telangana report to be a boost to the cause

Hyderabad, December 07: Justice BN Srikrishna Committee, which is due to submit its report on the “situation in Andhra Pradesh” by Dec 31, is unlikely to recommend a clear-cut solution to the Telangana tangle. But its findings are expected to strengthen the demand for carving out a separate State of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh.

Deftly handling the highly emotive issue, the committee’s report may “reflect the growing emotional pitch in favour of Telangana thus leaving it for the government to take a political call either way — take it or leave it,” highly-placed sources told Express.

The committee is likely to use 1.25 lakh representations, which it received during the last one year, to point at the depth of the Telangana sentiment. The committee has consulted various sections of the civil society such as industry, trade, trade unions, farmers, women’s organisations and students’ organisations during its innumerable visits to the State. “Though there are opposite sentiments too, the pro-Telangana sentiment outweighs them all by a huge margin,” sources said.

The panel’s report, likely to run into 600 pages, will analyse several issues such as water, representation of population in various fields, economy, share of resources and history. It is expected to give several options along with several riders, pros and cons, and a whole set of possibilities in different formats.

“There can be as many as five-six options. The draft of the report is still under preparation. But one thing is clear. There will not be any clear-cut option. All the options will be tied with myriad ifs and buts and pros and cons. However, the underlying tone will definitely help in preparing a roadmap for the future,” sources said.
