Telangana MPs seek Sonia’s intervention

New Delhi, January 08: A group of Congress MPs from Telangana region, led by Peddapalli MP G. Vivekanand, has sought urgent intervention of party president Sonia Gandhi on the alleged “repression” on students by the Hyderabad police and denial of democratic rights to organise peaceful protests.

In a joint memorandum to her on Friday, copy of which was also marked to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, the MPs charged that the police had even entered into the hostels of Osmania University and picked up students and beaten them up for organising silent protests in support of Telangana.

There was police firing inside the premises in which two students sustained pellet injuries, they said.

There is no press freedom and media had been prohibited from covering the incidents and the university had been made out of bounds for the journalists, they said.
