Fairs and festivals celebrated in Telangana region are not only the examples of Communal harmony but they are also our cultural and historical traditions. These thoughts were expressed by various speakers and intellectuals who participate in the 22nd colloqium of Telangana Resource Centre held at Oxford Grammar School, Himayathnagar. The topic of discussion was “Fairs and festivals of Telangana”.
The speakers expressed the view that Brahmins continued to paint the fairs and festivals of Telangana on the lines of religion in order to maintain their supremacy. These fairs and festivals were celebrated as expressions of the sentiments of the down trodden communities to vent their anger and protest against atrocities meted out to them by the cruel rulers. The speakers were of the opinion that nine different types of festivals used to be celebrated in all nine districts of Telangana.
On this occasion, the intellectuals opined that the annual “Urs” celebrated at the Muslim Dargahs were attended by Hindus and the Muslims alike. All of them used to pray and used to seek divine blessings. The intellectuals especially mentioned Muharram festival and said that it used to be celebrated in a special way. Many persons irrespective of their religion used to install “Alams” of the martyrs of Karbala in their houses and used to offer tributes.
The speakers were: Smt. Bandaru Sujatha Shekar, research scholar and writer, Prof. P. Subhachari, Mr. M. Bharath Bhushan, Smt. Anjana Devi, Ms. Rama Viresh Babu and others. President of Telangana Resource Centre Mr. M. Ved Kumar welcomed the participants of the colloqium and expressed the hope that the thoughts depicted in this colloquim would receive largest support from the people of Telangana.
