Telangana faces drought – Farmers forced to sell oxen

Hyderabad: The drought situation in Telangana State has forced the farmers to sell their oxen as they are not in a position to provide 30 Kg. fodders to these animals.

In the wake of ban on cow slaughter, encounter on smuggling of big animals has created this situation. There is a ban on the sale of cow meat but the meat of bullock and buffalo is allowed.

A survey revealed that there are 6 lakhs bullock in Medak, two lakh in Nizamabad, 1.5 lakh in Mahboob Nagar and more than 1 lakh in Kareem Nagar available for sale. The increasing rates of fodders also add to the worries of the farmers. If the farmers sell their oxen to butchers, he might face the wrath of the communal elements. Despite this situation, farmers are ready to sell their oxen. It is reported that the oxen of Medak District can be sold out easily since there is a slaughter house nearby.
