Hyderabad, September 20: Close on the heels of the Telangana advocates agitation demanding 42 per cent reservation in the legal officer posts, the Telangana Doctors’ Forum created a flutter by demanding a split in the Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors Association (APGDA) on regional lines.
Tension prevailed at the office of the APGDA at Koti today when at least 30 members of the Telangana Government Doctors’ Association (TGDA) staged a dharna in front of the office demanding bifurcation of the APGDA and conduct of elections separately for the divided units.
With the term of the APGDA’s executive committee coming to an end in a month, the EC members convened a meeting to chalk out a plan to hold elections. Around noon, about 30 members of the TGDA squatted in front of the office shouting slogans.
Dr B Raju, vice-president of the TGDA, said that Telangana doctors would benefit only if the APGDA was bifurcated. “We have already formed the Telangana Government Doctors Association a few months back to strengthen the ongoing agitation for bifurcation of AP. The doctors working in government hospitals in Telangana have become members of our association,” he said.
Dr K Ramesh Reddy, general secretary of the APGDA, said the TGDA is not a part of their association and they have no right to ask for a split on regional lines.”
A couple of hours later, the Sultan Bazar police swung into action and dispersed the Telangana doctors from the spot.
