Telangana: Congress MLAs heading for Delhi

Hyderabad, January 20: The alleged suicide of a student on Osmania University campus Venugopal for T cause has forced the Telangana Congress MLAs to visit New Delhi soon to put pressure on the party Central leadership to come out with a `clear cut’ statement on Telangana issue at the earliest.

The MLAs and MLCs have decided to meet here on January 21 to finalise their future course of action particularly on the resignation issue.

After paying a visit to Osmania University to mourn Venugopal, the Telangana Congress MLAs and MLCs held an emergency meeting at the New MLA quarters. It is learnt that former minister and senior member R Damodar Reddy has informed his colleagues that he has decided to resign immediately on the grounds that the victim belongs to his constituency (Suryapet in Nalgonda district).

However, other MLAs who included K Jana Reddy, B Saraiah and others have asked Damodar not to act in haste, but to have a `collective decision’ on the resignation issue.

Talking to newsmen later, Jana Reddy urged the agitators not to have any apprehensions or doubt about their (T Congress MLAs) sincerity He also urged the agitating students not to commit suicides. “We will support the victim’s family,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Telangana Congress MPs have also decided to leave for Delhi tomorrow evening. Nizamabad MP Madhu Yashki Goud said that they would urge the Centre to go ahead with the process on Telangana issue.

On the other hand, Congress MLAs and MLCs and PRP members of Seemandhra have postponed their proposed meeting at the Assembly committee hall this evening due to death of Venugopal. Government whip S Sailajanath informed that the meeting would take place tomorrow morning at 10.30 a.m. to discuss their future action programme on Samaikyandhra movement.
