Hyderabad: The Telangana government is planning to enact a new law to protect the farmers against crop loss due to spurious seeds, a senior official said here today.
State Agriculture Secretary C Parthasarathi, who held a meeting with officials on drafting the Telangana farmers Redressal of Grievances (for crop loss due to supply of defective seed) Act 2016, said the menace of spurious seeds distressed the farmers and that they are seeking redressal from the government.
“With the onset of Green Revolution, the production and usage of the hybrid seeds in crops has increased. The hybrid seeds are also available to the farmers in genetically modified form, which is finally leading the farmer to depend on the seed producing companies for every season. The farmers are showing interest in hybrid seeds…,” he said.
He said the Telangana Government has taken up the issue of the farmers suffering crop damages due to spurious or defective seeds and that it decided to have a special Act in accordance with problems on the ground, a state government release said.
