Telangana activists want renaming of stadium

Hyderabad, November 07: Demanding that the Rajiv Gandhi international cricket stadium at Uppal be named after the legendary tribal leader Komaram Bheem, pro-Telangana activists today threatened to obstruct the upcoming international match between India and New Zealand schedule to start on November 12 if their demand was not met.

Nearly 70 persons belonging to Osmania University, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today staged a dharna in front of the RGICS demanding that the stadium be named after the tribal leader.

Around 11 a.m. the pro-Telangana activists assembled outside the stadium and raised slogans in favour of their demand even as huge posse of policemen arrived at the scene anticipating trouble.

The dharna continued till 12.30 p.m. until the Cyberabad police picked them up which led to a mild tension in the area.

They also contended that injustice has been meted to players hailing from Telangana region and most of the cricket clubs in the twin cities have been owned by persons hailing from Seemandhra region. The agitators gave a memorandum with a list of demands to one of the officials of RGICS.

“We will obstruct the India-New Zealand match if our demands are not met,’’ Gemini Babu, one of the agitators said.

The police later released them.
