The presence of mind of two girls, aged 15 and 13, saved their own lives as well as that of their mother from suicide bid here last night.
Fed up with her life after her husband turned a drunkard, the 35-year-old woman along with her two daughters, took her two daughters to the railway track telling them that she was taking the children to their grand mother’s house. But at Karamanikuppam railway gate as the Villippuram passanger train was approaching the level crossing, the woman told her daughters that the three were going to committ suicide by alowing themselves to be run over. She then hugged her two daughters and got prepared to jump on to the track as the train was nearing them.
Frightened, the two girls managed to free themselves from their mother and caught hold of her firmly. When she tried to break away from them, they held her tight against a power post till the train passed them. People at the level crossing, who were witnessing the filmy style incident, rushed to them as the train passed and brought them on to the road. They promised her all help and advised not to resort to such an act again.
Tears rolling down her cheeks, the woman narrated her plight to them and assured them that she would live for her daughters. On coming to know about the incident, Mudaliarpet police rushed to the spot and began investigating. UNI
