The teachers working in the Jammu and Kashmir Education Department on Wednesday staged a protest here demanding the release of their salaries.
Hundreds of Rehbar-e-Taleem (Education Guides) teachers assembled at Residency Road here to hold a protest in support of their demand, officials said.
They said the teachers, who work for a nominal monthly honorarium for first seven years of their service before they are regularised in government employment, alleged that they have not been paid salaries for several months now.
Police asked the protestors to disperse peacefully as they had not obtained the required permission but the teachers refused.
More than two dozen protestors were taken into preventive custody while the others were chased away by police, who resorted to lathicharge, the officials said.
They said no one was hurt in the incident.
