New Delhi, July 08: Describing the educational reforms suggested by the Yashpal Committee as “contradictory”, the country’s largest teachers’ body on Wednesday said they would soon come up with an alternative proposal.
“The recommendations of the Yashpal Committee and the report of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) are contradictory in many aspects,” All India Federation of Universities and College Teachers Organisation president Thomas Joseph said here.
“Prof Yashpal’s approach was holistic wherein he sought integration of under-graduate, post-graduate and research levels. Following the recommendations of the NKC, the Centre, however, has announced establishment of a number of institutions like IITs and IIMs which are specialised in certain branches. This is not a holistic approach,” Joseph opined.
The teachers’ body would organise regional level seminars followed by a national convention in October to formulate an opinion on the recommendations.
“We will come up with an alternative proposal soon, and recommend some guidelines for future activities,” Joseph said.
Blaming the union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal for not trying to build up a consensus by discussing his plans before the announcement, he said that such a drastic restructuring of the educational system is impossible in 100 days.
