Auckland, May 04: A New Zealand primary school teacher who posed nude in Penthouse has been deregistered “for bringing the profession into disrepute.”
Rachel Whitwell appeared in the January 2010 issue of the magazine draped over a school desk, alongside a story that quoted her saying: “I am submissive in the bedroom because during the day I have to be in control in the classroom.”
The New Zealand Teachers’ Council’s disciplinary tribunal found the actions of the 29-year- old amounted to serious misconduct and revoked her teaching credentials.
Whitwell said she had left her job in Auckland before the photoshoot to pursue a modeling career.
She said that as she was not employed by the school at the time the photographs were taken, she should not be struck off for appearing in a magazine that was legally available throughout New Zealand.
“Even if I was teaching, I do not believe that you or the teachers’ council has any right to impose Victorian moral opinions on my life outside the classroom,” she told the tribunal.
