Teacher beats student, breaks his wrist

Vishakapatnam, January 31: In yet another case of corporal punishment, a mathematics teacher of Sri Saraswathi Vidya Vihar at Sriharipuram in the city beat up a Class X student and broke his left wrist as the student had failed to secure more than 80 per cent marks in the examination. The incident occurred on Thursday but came to light today after the police took the teacher into custody today.

According to reports, the student, R Vasantha Sai has been studying in the school from Class VIII. Though not a very brilliant student in academics, he has been scoring above 60 per cent marks in all subjects. In the last school examination, he secured 25 out of total 50 marks in mathematics. Angry over his performance, the mathematics teacher K Sridhar beat him up with a lathi and broke his left wrist. Ironically, Sai is a left-hander.

After the incident, the management of the school neither informed Sai’s parents nor admitted him to the hospital.

When he told his parents after reaching home, they took him to a hospital where the doctors said his wrist had been fractured.

Yesterday, Sai’s parents lodged a complaint against Sridhar at Malkapuram police station. The police took him into custody today and will produce him before the court tomorrow. Police said investigation was on and action would be taken on the basis of injury report.

District education Officer M Suryanarayana said steps would be initiated against the school management on the basis of police and medical reports. He said he would try to provide a transcripter for Sai for the public examination if necessary.
