TDP: Declare floods national calamity

Hyderabad, October 10: In view of the devastation created by the recent floods in the State, Telugu Desam Party today urged the Centre to declare it as a national calamity and extend required help to provide immediate relief to the victims.

It wanted the Central government to release Rs 6,000 crore as an interim relief from National Calamity Contingency Fund (NCCF) to restore normalcy in the State. In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to Hyderabad today, TDP leaders K Yerrannaidu, N Nageswara Rao and Umareddy Venkateswarlu said that there were anomalies between the norms stipulated by the Government of India and those being followed by the State government.

They said that despite the Central government’s guidelines to provide Rs 35,000 and Rs 10,000 for fully damaged pucca and kutcha houses respectively, the State government is providing only Rs 5,000 for any fully damaged house.

They sought compensation to crop loss, sand-cast lands and erosion victims as per the Central government guidelines. They also wanted the Government to provide relief by supplying provisions to farmers, weavers, traders, artisans, fishermen and businessmen immediately.
