TCS targets small town talent

Mu,bai, July 30: IT major Tata Consultancy Services ( TCS) will look to increase its recruitment from smaller cities in the coming decades, said chief executive officer ( CEO) and managing director ( MD) S. Ramadorai.

He was announcing the findings of the TCS Generation Web 2.0 Trends survey conducted by the company.

Ramadorai said the rising level of netizens among the current crop of teenagers in non- metros is indeed positive.

“ Ultimately, we are looking at talent that we can train and mould,” he said. “ Nearly one out of ten people on the planet are under 25 years and living in India. This is the significance of India’s next generation and what they do, think and aspire for,” added Ramadorai.

The company plans to incorporate training programmes during the summer months for students in Tier- II cities and smaller towns. “ When we ultimately expand in places like Cochin, Coimbatore, Nagpur ( mini- metros), etc, in the future, we would invariably look to recruit the current school students,” he said.

The survey was conducted across 14,000 high school students in 12 Indian cities. Around 48 per cent of the respondents said they prefer an Indian IT company than a foreign multi- national corporation ( MNC) to work.

According to the findings of the survey, cyber cafes are the most popular Internet access points for mini- metro teenagers ( 58 per cent). Ahmedabad tops the list of mini- metros where Internet access from home is the highest ( 63 per cent).

The study has also revealed that engineering continues to be the most preferred career choice. Around 35 per cent of respondents have opted for this field of study. Information technology ( IT) has emerged as the second choice of career across India.

“ However, metros continue to give first preference to a career in IT,” said Ramadorai.
