Taxi drivers stage protest against DSP

Shimla: A senior traffic police official allegedly beat up two taxi drivers under the influence of alcohol here, triggering protests by their colleagues who blocked a road and demanded that the official be suspended.

The drivers blocked the road for more than an hour, forcing police to use mild force to disperse them.

The protesters claimed that the DSP (Traffic), who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, mercilessly beat up the drivers for parking improperly.

Even if the drivers had parked the vehicle at wrong place the DSP could only penalise them but had no right to physically assault them, they said.

Meanwhile, a delegation of taxi operators met the Deputy Commissioner, Shimla, and submitted a memorandum demanding suspension of the DSP and registration of a case against him.

The DC ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Shimla SP, D W Negi, said that cross FIRs have been lodged by the DSP and taxi drivers and investigations are in progress.
