New Delhi, March 05: Leading spiritual artist Sohan Qadri, a proponent of the ‘dot’ in contemporary tantrik art, died in Canada after a prolonged kidney aliment, the Delhi Art Gallery said Saturday. He was 78.
Qadri leaves behind one of the largest and the most profound body of tantrik art since independence.
His demise Wednesday marks the end of a chapter in the merging of spirituality and art that interpreted ancient tantrik philosophy of meditation, renunciation and freedom and commune with the almighty into colours on papers.
A versatile poet, Qadri composed spiritual poetry inspired by Sufism and Buddhism.
Born in 1932 to a wealthy family in Punjab, from a young age Qadri was drawn to the mystical, influenced by the two spiritualists who lived on the family farm.
That influence coloured his work and stayed with him all his life in his chosen career as painter and yoga teacher based in Denmark, where he lived for three decades.
The Delhi Art Gallery possesses one of the largest collections of Qadri’s work.
