Tampered meters: Seventy autos seized by RTA

Hyderabad, December 29: The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) officials seized at least 70 autos on Tuesday, which were plying with tampered digital meters. This led to them allegedly fleecing passengers for more money than the actual fare. RTA officials also collected at least `2 lakh fine from the errant autos.

B Venkateshwarlu, joint transport commissioner told Express that as part of their regular drive, enforcement officials cracked down on erring auto owners. He said they were yet to get final figures by Tuesday evening.

He said a number of auto drivers had installed tampered digital meters. He added that errant drivers would not be spared from now on as they have no excuse after the substantial hike in auto fares.

Venkateshwarlu said all seized vehicles’ permits would be cancelled till the violators pay their fines. In the past two days, a few vehicles were issued challans for refusing passengers, overcharging, driving without licence, installing tampered digital meters and not replacing them with tamper-proof meters, according to the JTC.
