Chennai, June 17: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has decided to follow the billing system of telecom companies and start automatic remote meter reading.
In a policy note submitted to the state assembly Wednesday, the energy department said the board has planned to introduce an ‘online web-based real time remote automatic meter reading for high tension services’.
As a first step, the board will do a pilot project on an outlay of Rs.60 lakh.
Replying to the debate on demands for grants for the energy department, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami expressed satisfaction at customers’ response to the board’s online bill payment facility launched in the state capital late last year.
‘In Chennai, around 30 percent of the power consumers have opted for online bill payment facility,’ Veeraswami said, adding that it could be extended across the state.
