A day after the Supreme Court commuted the death sentence of the three assassins of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi to life imprisonment, the Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday decided to release all four convicts in the case.
The decision to release them was taken at a emergency cabinet meet chaired by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
Clearly, the AIADMK government is aiming to reap political dividend from the sensitive issue in the upcoming General Elections. Following yesterday’s verdict, the DMK, MDMK and CPI along with the convicts’ relatives demanded their release from prison.
