Tamil Nadu earmarks Rs 4,000 cr for food subsidy

Chennai, January 11: The Tamil Nadu Government has earmarked Rs 4,000 crore this year for food subsidy, including its flagship rice scheme, with a view to curbing prices of essential commodities, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin informed the state Assembly today.

Replying to the debate on the motion to thank the Governor for his address to the Assembly, Stalin also listed out various “achievements” of his father M Karunanidhi-led Government, besides promising to complete the Japan-funded Hogenakkal Drinking Water project, opposed by Karnataka, ahead of schedule.

“This government is taking various steps to curb prices of essential commodities and the government’s scheme of providing (subsidised) rice at a cost of Re one per kg is an effort in that direction,” Stalin said.

Besides that, cereals like toor dhal, urad dhal and sugar were also being given at subsidised cost.
