‘Talks possible only if Naxals lay down arms’

New Delhi, March 07: The Centre on Sunday categorically asked the Naxals to lay down arms, virtually dismissing Maoists’ truce offer some days ago.

The statement came from Union Home Secretary GK Pillai today, who while talking to reporters here, said that government’s stand on naxalism issue is “unambiguous” and that talks would only be possible “if Maoists categorically give up violence”.

Notably, few days ago Pillai said that Maoists had plans to overthrow the Indian state by 2050. Later, top Naxal leader Koteswar Rao alias Kishenji claimed it would be achieved much before that date.

“We will overthrow the Indian government much before 2050,” Kishenji told a news agency from an undisclosed location.

He claimed the Maoists had their own Army with the help of which it would overthrow the Indian state much before 2050.

Maoists had offered a 72-day peace offer.

Accusing the Centre of diverting attention, Kishenji said the rebels are fully prepared for a long-term revolution against the government.
