New Delhi, December 02: Government was not averse to holding talks with Naxalites provided they abjure violence, Home Minister P Chidambaram informed the Rajya Sabha today. ”I have offered talks with Naxalites if they abjure violence. We cannot talk about any subject till these groups adjure violence,”Mr Chidambaram said during Question hour.
The Minister said the policy of the Government was that they were willing to hold talks with Naxal groups or facilitate talks between them and the state Government. However, for this to happen, they had to abjure violence.
”As long as violence persists, I do not see any hope for talks,”he said.
Earlier, Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken informed the House that incidents of Naxalite violence have increased following merger of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and Maoist Communist Centre in 2004, thus forming the CPI(Maoist). He said the CPI(Maoist) is the most potent group in terms of spread, strength and violence profile, accounting for nearly 90 per cent of all Naxal violence.
