Kabul, September 13: Taliban insurgents attacked the embassy district in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Tuesday.
At least four loud explosions were heard in the embassy district, and gunfire was heard after one of the blasts.
Police say militants are firing rockets at the US Embassy.
According to police official Mohammed Zahir, a large group of gunmen are firing from positions in a tall office building that is under construction near the US embassy.
“There has been an explosion and gunfire, there are several armed attackers in Abdul Haq Square,” said Zahir, head of Kabul’s Crime Investigation Unit.
“There could be suicide bombers but it is unclear at the moment.”
Police and other security officials blocked roads around the US embassy and other diplomatic missions, and said the attack had happened at a nearby square.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it targeted official buildings in the area.
