Kabul [Afghanistan]: The Taliban has rejected any role in the three consecutive explosions in Kabul, in which as many as 20 people were killed and 87 injured on Saturday afternoon during the funeral ceremony of Mohammad Salim Izadyar, the son of the deputy speaker of the Afghan Senate House.
“The fighters of the group have no role in the explosions that took place during the burial and funeral ceremony in Sarai Shamali area of Kabul,” the Khaama Press reported group’s spokesman in a statement.
Abdullah Abdullah, the Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Salahuddin Rabbani were both in attendance along with other government officials at the funeral at the time of the explosions. All were unharmed.
Speaking at a press conference Saturday evening, Abdullah condemned the bombings and called for calm while an investigation into the attack is carried out.
President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack and said “the country was under attack.”
“I condemn the outrageous attack on mourners burying the martyred. The country is under attack. We must be strong and united,” he said. (ANI)
