Taliban, October 23: The United Nations office in the western Afghanistan has come under attack as the Taliban step up their offensives against the US-led foreign interests in the country.
Officials said four militants attacked the compound, located just outside Herat city, blowing up an explosives-packed car at the front gate.
Two of them managed to get inside the building but were killed by police. There were no casualties among the UN workers, officials reported.
A spokesperson for the Taliban said that 16 of their militants were involved in the attack and several managed to enter the compound, a Press TV correspondent reported.
Militants, armed with heavy weaponry, have attacked foreign embassies and UN offices on several occasions in Afghanistan over the past two years.
The attacks came as the US-led war in Afghanistan seems to be at a crucial stage with the militants believed to be gaining ground.
The 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan was launched with the official objective of curbing militancy and bringing peace and stability to the country.
Nine years on, however, the US and Afghan officials admit the country remains unstable as civilians continue to pay the heaviest price.
