Hyderabad, May 02: Tainted Director of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) YV Rao is at it again. The man, who had been sent on a long leave after students virtually necked him out for his alleged corrupt practices, was back in office.
Sources in NIT told Express that to the surprise of everyone on the campus, including senior faculty members, YV Rao walked into the Director’s chamber and occupied the chair around 12 noon on Saturday, a holiday.
He was asked to go on leave by the NIT Board of Governors recently after the students detained him in the auditorium until he put in his papers. ‘‘In the minutes of the Board of Governors’ meeting, it is clearly said that YV Rao is to go on a long leave until the inquiry against him is completed,’’ the sources said. The Chairman of BOG has constituted three different committees against YV Rao to look into alleged irregularities committed by him. In fact, he is supposed to face the inquiry committee on Sunday. The committee is probing irregularities in civil works, administrative and financial affairs. Rao had faced the panel on April 27 and 28.
The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has appointed Sadanand Gokhale, Director of NIT, Nagpur, as the Additional Director of NIT, Warangal.
Besides, one Rama Rao was appointed as in-charge Director to handle the affairs in the absence of Gokhale.
When contacted, NIT, Warangal, Chairman BL Deekshitulu confirmed that YV Rao had turned up at the office and that the same had been conveyed to MHRD. ‘‘The comeback of YV Rao is against the Board of Governors’ decision. But he informed me and the HRDM that his medical leave expired on April 30 and that he is fit to join on Saturday.
As Chairman, I cannot directly initiate action. The powers are vested with the HRDM and the issue will be dealt with by the Central officials,’’ Deekshitulu said.
