Johannesburg, July 23: Park officials say thieves have stolen a plaque that proclaims Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain a monument.
Table Mountain National Park said on Thursday in a statement that the brass heritage plaque dated 1957 has been missing since mid-July. Officials say the plaque is “of huge heritage importance”.
The plaque is 150cm long and 70cm wide. It was mounted on a granite rock in the flat-topped mountain’s Platteklip Gorge.
An investigation into the theft has been launched.
Table Mountain is part of the Cape’s unique floral region and was named a Unesco World Heritage site in 2004.
