The Telangana Assembly on Saturday unanimously paid tributes to Telangana martyrs and observed a two-minute silence in their memory.
Announcing passage of the resolution paying tributes to Telangana martyrs, Speaker Madhusudhana Chary said the House was paying tributes to 369 Telangana martyrs, who had scarified their lives during 1969 Telangana agitation and 1,200 Telangana youth died during the recent Telangana agitation. The Speaker felt the Telangana society would never forget the supreme sacrifices made by Telangana martyrs.
Earlier, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao moved a resolution to pay tributes to those who laid down their lives for formation of separate Telangana State. He reminded that late Prof Jayashankar had always bothered about suppression the people of the Telangana. The death of Prof. Jayashankar was irreparable loss to the Telangana. “It was sad that Prof. Jayashankar was no more when the goal was achieved”, he added. KCR said the sacrifices of Telangana youth for the cause of separate State, starting with suicide of Srikantha Chary, reached 1,500, he bemoaned. KCR’s eyes were moist when he mentioned about suicide of Srikantha Chary.
Reacting to the demand of TDP floor leader Erabelli Dayakar Rao to build a memorial for Telangana martyrs, the Chief Minister said the present resolution was limited only to pay tributes to the martyrs. He assured that a Telangana martyrs’ memorial will be constructed in Hyderabad Statue of Liberty in America. The matter would be discussed at the all-party meeting, which would be organized soon, he added. He also informed that the Chief Minister in Hyderabad and District Collectors in the districts would participate in the Telangana Formation Day celebrations every year after paying tributes at Telangana martyrs memorials.
Backing the resolution, Congress member Chinna Reddy said the role played by students in the T movement would always be remembered.
Errabelli Dayakar Rao urged the government to pay pension to Telangana agitators on par with freedom fighters. Telangana ideologue late Prof. Jayashankar and Balladeer Gaddar should be honored keeping in mind their services for the cause of Telangana, Erraballi he further demanded.
