New York: The Syrian Government forces, with the help of the Russian military, on Thursday recaptured its ancient city of Palmyra from Islamic State (IS).
The Syrian army announced, in a statement, that its forces were in complete control of Palmyra, as reported by the Washington Post.
The victory of the Syrian Government came after the Islamic State marched back into the town in December in a surprise assault that appeared to have caught the Syrian army unaware.
The Islamic State surge was the first offensive operation conducted by the militants in more than 18 months and raised fears that they were on the advance again.
The operation to retake Palmyra was supported by the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah. (ANI)
